Cockroach is the term used for some 4,000 species of insect that can vary considerably in size, appearance and behaviour.

Generally speaking, the cockroach tends to have wide legs that allow it to move quickly on the ground, not being a good climber or even flyer, despite some species actually having wings; its flat, elongated body, combined with its speed, makes it difficult to crush and allows it to creep into crevices where it can hide.

It is a predominantly nocturnal insect, which, combined with the characteristics mentioned above, makes it even more difficult to detect; its diet is based on starches and sugars, so it has a strong preference for fruit, but many species are also omnivorous or are saprophagous.

The damage linked to the presence of cockroaches is similar to that of other insect species; they carry bacteria and other micro-organisms and transfer them to our food when they eat it, risking health problems and spoiling food.

Four species of cockroach are mainly widespread in Europe: the Blattella germanica (also known as the German cockroach) and Supella longipalpa (the brown-banded cockroach), which prefer warm environments, the black cockroach (Blatta orientalis) and the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana, which can also fly), which prefer damp places and therefore take refuge in sewers and drains, making them particularly effective vectors of pathogens.

In the presence of food and suitable environmental conditions, cockroaches reproduce at a very fast rate, multiplying their population within a few months. Signs of infestation include droppings, which appear as black dust, moulted skin, damage to food packaging, books and leather, and a musty smell.

Monitor traps for cockroaches are an excellent solution for preventing the situation from getting out of control; a special substance (flavouring or food gel) attracts these insects to the adhesive surface, which blocks their movement.

By placing them in dark, sheltered places where these insects can be found, one can both remove the cockroaches from circulation and quantify their actual presence in the environment, so as to assess whether there is a need for more drastic measures.

The cockroach monitor trap uses no active agents or dangerous substances, so it does its job without posing a risk to pets or small children.

IGO manufactures a wide range of monitor traps for cockroaches to contract thanks to its 15 years of experience as a Medical and Surgical Device Manufacturer: consult our catalogue of monitor traps and contact us for further information.
